Attract the Energy of Love with Feng Shui: Setting Up Your Bedroom

Why is the setup of your bedroom important in feng shui? First of all, most people spend about 1/3 of their time in the bedroom. It is the spot where  our bodies and minds balance, recover, rejuvenate and more every day. It is essential that our bedrooms to be a place where we feel physically, mentally and emotionally safe – a place where we can be ourselves and express ourselves. Our bedroom is also a symbol of our inner self. Who you are and what you desire for your life to be like should be reflected in this heart of your home.

While the design of each person’s bedroom should be unique to that person’s needs and desires, here’s a list of 5 tips to start with in your bedroom:

  1. Put your bed in a place so that when you lay down, you can see anyone entering the room.
  2. Place the headboard against a solid wall – this will bring a feeling of stability and support.
  3. Does the lighting in your bedroom reflect its use? Is there low, soft lighting?
  4. Keep under the bed free from clutter.
  5. There has also been a great deal of advice about having mirrors in the bedroom. You really don’t want to have mirrors in a place where you can see your reflection while you are lying in bed. This is for a number of reasons. It could disrupt your sleep; make you think someone else is in the room when they are not. Mirrors also reflect and amplify energy. If you want to experiment, try covering your mirrors with a scarf or sheet and see if you get a different energetic feel in the room, or if you sleep better.

When you are setting up your bedroom, consider your purpose for the bedroom; is it really a cozy sanctuary for you? Do you really need a computer, video game console, or TV in the room? Do you absolutely NEED to sleep with your cell phone? Think about not only your safety and creating a safe environment in the bedroom but remember that every object in our environment has an impact on us – physically and psychologically.

So, let’s move more directly to the topic of love. I firmly believe that in order to attract love into your life, you must first love yourself. Do you truly love yourself – and ALL of yourself? The best parts, the worst parts – all parts. And do you love yourself TODAY, now, as you are? If you are saying things to yourself like I love myself, but I’ll love myself more when I lose the next 10 pounds, or when I get my next degree, or a new job? That is all future talk and it is not unconditional. You must love yourself unconditionally ALL the time – accept every facet of yourself and be grateful for who you are right now! If you don’t feel like this, there are a number of things that you can do to change your feelings about yourself. One of them is through the way you set up your environment. Imagine what a person who completely loves and accepts herself wants to be surrounded by and feel like in the bedroom. Write down what you think the bedroom of this person who completely loves and accepts herself looks like! Then, take an inventory of your room. How far is the gap between your imagined bedroom and your bedroom? Now, what can you do to bridge the gap?

One thing you may be called to do is to get rid of the clutter. Clutter here could be ANYTHING that you do not love, do not use, and does not belong in the bedroom. It could also be something that reminds you of a bad time in your life, a bad relationship, or a time when you did not completely love yourself.

Another thing you may be called to do is to get some new bed linens or curtains, or change the artwork, or even paint the walls. Whatever you do, focus on the feeling that you want to have in the bedroom, what you want to bring into your life and how you want to BE in the world.

I’d love to hear how you are setting your bedroom up to represent LOVE in your life (including self-love)! Please comment below!

  1. This is pretty timely for me, Felicia – thank you! I’m realizing that I haven’t really paid much attention to my bedroom since I moved into my new apartment! I’ve spent a LOT of time rearranging the front room, and figuring out what feels good and inspiring there, but have very much neglected my bedroom! I’m going to take another look at it from this new perspective and see what I can do to bring more LOVE for me into that room, to really create an oasis for myself. 🙂 Thank you for these tips!

    1. You are welcome, Jesse! Often times, we focus on the more public areas of our home that other people will see first and forget about the areas that are most meaningful to us. I’m glad you are taking time to take a fresh look at your bedroom 🙂

  2. This is so informative, and I loved that I naturally followed a lot of the steps in my current bedroom 🙂 We do have one mirror in our bedroom, but it’s up against a wall where you can’t see it unless you’re sitting in front of it. I noticed a big difference in how I felt when I stopped bringing my computer to bed. That helped a lot! But I do have a question! Last night, my partner and I changed sides of the bed because he wasn’t feeling well (meaning I slept on his side and he slept on my side of the bed). Neither one of us slept well despite being really tired and having an awesome intimacy session right before bed. I was wondering if that had anything to do with us changing sides of the bed?

    1. Isn’t it wonderful how our intuition can tell us how to set up our spaces? 🙂

In reference to your question, I know there have been studies about our preferences for picking a side of the bed to sleep on. I think part of it is that our bodies become used to our placement in the room and in the bed. You will get a different energetic feel from different areas of the room. If you are not used to this “feeling,” you may not be completely comfortable and relaxed. You subconscious might be slightly “on alert” to evaluate the changes.

  3. Once again, Felicia, I love your Feng Shui tips, and I wholeheartedly support implementing them in the bedroom. I know that for me, personally, my bedroom is really the only sacred space I have in my house. When it becomes cluttered, I become cluttered. I also love how you suggest people really determine whether those electronics are necessary in the replenishing space of the bedroom. I am a huge advocate for keeping a cell-phone as far as possible from the sleep zone, and I’ve come to realize that TVs and all that are unnecessary as well. thank you so much!

  4. Felicia, YES! Great point about keeping underneath the bed clear. I’ve been stuffing lots of shoes under there lately and maybe a box or two. I will definitely be clearing this out, so smart. Interesting point about the mirror, as well. Would love to hear an elaboration on that (even if just your personal opinion). Okay…time to go search on Pinterest for some new curtain and artwork ideas 🙂

    xxo,
    Marcie

  5. Hi Marcie! Mirrors reflect and amplify energy. At a time when your body needs to be completely relaxed and have an opportunity to regenerate, bouncing energy around you, or off of you when the mirror faces you, is not conducive to a great night’s sleep. Different traditions of feng shui also have various symbolism attached to the idea of having a mirror in the bedroom; but for me, slowing down the energy and creating a soft, relaxing atmosphere that supports what you need in the bedroom is my primary consideration.
